Best of Tolkien。。
Derrick McDonald,
The movies filled in a lot of visual holes but also changed a lot too。 These books were epic! My favorite is 'The Hobbit', though。 Some parts of the ring trilogy slowed me down a bit but I am not up on Northern European Saxon-like culture。 So the short comings are likely my own。 A definite must read。 The movies filled in a lot of visual holes but also changed a lot too。 These books were epic! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I love these books so much! I highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys fantasy, fiction, and imagination, my only complaint about is everything is described in SO much detail to the point where I start to wonder did we need two pages describing someones outfit? I love the books but if you want a more quick and to the point yet still contains all the wonder of the books I recommend watching the movies。
Aman,
Amazing

Middle-Earth is one of the best developed, most detailed, and most fascinating worlds in all of literature。 That's a big statement。 Not only did this series inspire so many modern fantasy stories, it still manages to surpass them in many ways。 From complex character to unique languages, the saga of Middle-earth is as complete as the come。 Warning: if you are looking for a fast-paced book with tons of action all the time, this is not the story for you。 If you are looking for rich characters, grea Middle-Earth is one of the best developed, most detailed, and most fascinating worlds in all of literature。 That's a big statement。 Not only did this series inspire so many modern fantasy stories, it still manages to surpass them in many ways。 From complex character to unique languages, the saga of Middle-earth is as complete as the come。 Warning: if you are looking for a fast-paced book with tons of action all the time, this is not the story for you。 If you are looking for rich characters, great plot, and a really incredible details in story building, you won't find much that's better。 。。。more
Kendall Carlsson,
My first exposure to Tolkien was via the much maligned Ralph Bakshi/Saul Zaentz animated film。 I was prepared to overlook its flaws, having been entranced by this depiction of the rich and complex world of Middle Earth and became extremely frustrated that a sequel to that film was never made。Therefore in order to discover how the tale concluded, at the age of twelve I obtained the complete Lord of the Rings in a single volume and launched straight into it, ignoring the insistence of others to re My first exposure to Tolkien was via the much maligned Ralph Bakshi/Saul Zaentz animated film。 I was prepared to overlook its flaws, having been entranced by this depiction of the rich and complex world of Middle Earth and became extremely frustrated that a sequel to that film was never made。Therefore in order to discover how the tale concluded, at the age of twelve I obtained the complete Lord of the Rings in a single volume and launched straight into it, ignoring the insistence of others to read The Hobbit first, something I still do not consider to be an absolute necessity。It took me a year to finish LotR。 Learning as much of Tolkien's comprehensive lore as possible became an obsession at that time。 World building on this scale has seldom been replicated and therefore tackling this masterpiece remains a completely immersive experience for readers today。I have LotR to thank for a lifelong love of tales involving epic quests and the fantasy genre overall。A year or two after finishing LotR, I did read The Hobbit and found it a relatively light, fun and enjoyable adventure tale in its own right。 。。。more

I'm not sure what there is for me to say about The Lord of the Rings that hasn't already been said - if you haven't read it before in this day and age, I don't know that there's anything I could tell you that could convince you。 So, instead of a helpful, objective review, I'll just tell you my favourite thing about this tale: it's those wee hobbits, man。 The way that Tolkien writes their stories into this epic, dramatic world makes me cry every time I read it。 How these simple, peaceful folk acc I'm not sure what there is for me to say about The Lord of the Rings that hasn't already been said - if you haven't read it before in this day and age, I don't know that there's anything I could tell you that could convince you。 So, instead of a helpful, objective review, I'll just tell you my favourite thing about this tale: it's those wee hobbits, man。 The way that Tolkien writes their stories into this epic, dramatic world makes me cry every time I read it。 How these simple, peaceful folk accept hardship and danger and overwhelming darkness just so they can protect their friends and the equally simple and peaceful home they leave behind。 It's this simplicity that often carries the story for me - that even miles from home, from the fires of Mount Doom, the white towers of Gondor or at the right hand of the king of Rohan, each of those hobbits thinks of the others at the very moment when all hope seems lost。 Middle Earth is a sweeping landscape with a rich history and kaleidoscope of cultures, of which the Halflings are arguable the most sheltered, and yet wherever their quest takes them, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin soon find themselves an integral, beloved part of the community。 It's a clear message that Tolkien weaves here。 Even the smallest of us can make a difference。 That there is always good work we can do in the face of despair。 That, whatever that looks like to you, your friends can carry you where you need to go。I'll leave you with a favourite quote that sums up the great warrior (and gardener) of the Third Age, Samwise Gamgee: In that hour of trial it was the love of his master that helped most to hold him firm; but also deep down in him lived still unconquered his plain hobbitsense: he knew in the core of his heart that he was not large enough to bear such a burden。。。 the one small garden of a free gardener was all his need and due, not a garden swollen to a realm; his own hands to use, not the hands of others to command。 。。。more

I am reading hobbit, 75th-anniversary edition。 I am currently on page 80 and I really want to read more。 In my opinion, J。R。R Tolkien did a fantastic job in making the story startup at a good pace。 This makes me want to read the rest of the book。 The main character Bilbo Baginns has been brought out of his home to conquer a palace with a group of 13 other Dwarves。
Alison Olson,
